LEARN TO SWIM LEVELS

Our curriculum in the Learn to Swim Levels emphasizes proven Survival Skills that reduce the risk of drowning. Click the Levels below to see the Curriculum details and class Schedule. Click ENROLL on the left of a class listing to begin enrollment. You can also join a WAITLIST if the class you prefer is full.

In the Tumbleweed level, we introduce the joys of swimming to each student at their own pace. Every child will learn the basic water skills that make swimming fun!

Entry requirement is 3+ years of age

Skills learned in Tumbleweed:

  • Happy swimmer
  • Blowing bubbles and going underwater (submersions)
  • Assisted glides and back floats
  • Monkey walks along the wall and independent climb outs
  • Froggy dives

Our instructors will continue to build swimmer’s confidence by presenting more challenging skills. The primary goal in Teddy Bear Cholla level is to develop a strong kick, and to rollover into a back float independently.

Entry requirement for level 2 is all the skills learned in level 1.

Skills Learned in Teddy Bear Cholla:

  • Popcorns (rhythmic bounces while blowing bubbles)
  • Independent Kick glide
  • Kick glide with roll-over (belly to back and back to belly)
  • Independent back float
  • Independent climb out, jump into the pool and resurface into a back float

The Golden Barrel Level is the final level of our “survival school”. Swimmers learn to coordinate their arm and leg movements to form the base of their freestyle stroke.

The entry requirements for level 3 are all the skills learned in level 1 and level 2.

Skills learned in Golden Barrel:

  • 10 independent rhythmic popcorns
  • Big arms coordinated with strong kickers
  • Swim–float–swim using big arms and rollovers
  • Finning and kicking
  • Diving to the bottom to retrieve rings/items with minimal assistance

STROKE TECHNIQUE LEVELS

In Stroke School, we teach the four competitive strokes, as well as Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke, diving and treading. In preparation for swim team we incorporate the correct use of training equipment into the learning process of each stroke and skill.

In level 4, swimmers will begin swimming in the longer and deeper lanes! In the following levels they will begin to learn the 4 major swim strokes starting with freestyle in the Prickly Pear level!

Entry requirements for level 4 are all the skills learned in levels 1-3.

Skills learned in Prickly Pear:

  • Rhythmic popcorns in deep water
  • Freestyle with a smooth side breath every four strokes (2 lengths / laps)
  • Elementary backstroke with a glide
  • Treading water independently for 1 minute
  • Kneeling dives

In the Blue Agave level, for the first time in our curriculum swimmers begin learning a stroke other than Freestyle. Just because swimmers are on their back and able to breath freely does not mean that backstroke is easy. We place great focus on proper technique – body rotation, head position and proper hand placement.

Entry requirements are all the skills learned in level 4.

Skills learned in Bleu Agave:

  • Independent popcorns in deep water
  • Proficient in Freestyle and backstroke with flip turns
  • Treading water independently for 2 minutes

In the Joshua Tree Level, students learn a very difficult stroke, the Breaststroke. It takes coordination and determination to learn the rhythm of Breaststroke. Students will also improve their swimming stamina by swimming laps of the strokes learned at remedial levels.

Entry requirements are all the skills learned in levels 4 & 5

Skills learned in Joshua Tree:

  • Continuous freestyle and backstroke with flip turns (4 laps)
  • Breaststroke with proper technique and rhythm
  • Open turns / two-hand touch turns
  • Treading water independently for 3 minutes
  • Standing dives (Pima location only)

The final level of Stroke School is the Saguaro Level. In Level 7 swimmers learn the Butterfly. Coaches will challenge swimmers in this advanced class by conditioning them in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. When swimmers graduate from Saguaro level they are ready for swim team!

Skills learned in Saguaro:
  • Continuous freestyle and backstroke with flip turns (4 laps)
  • Continuous Breaststroke with open turns / two-hand touch turns
  • Butterfly with proper technique
  • Treading water independently for 5 minutes
  • Conditioning to swim for longer periods of time and distance
